The Scooter

Terry’s scooter is an LML Star 125 cc. In July 2013 having saved money from his job in Homebase, Terry bought it and arranged for it to be delivered to our home. Within an hour of its arrival, he went on to crash his mum’s car into it whilst it was parked on the driveway …

Once insurance had been arranged, Terry took the scooter out and within 3 hours had found that grass verges can be pretty unforgiving. A 2-mile walk, pushing the scooter home followed.

£200 and a new steering column later, the bike was back on the road.

For the next year, the LML was his ticket to freedom and independence. He rode it everywhere and on the last day of his sixth form, took it onto the playing fields of his school with a mate on the back armed with a water pistol, spraying anyone coming near them. Predictably, staff at the school were not keen to support this activity and the lads were invited to leave the grounds immediately.

A week later Terry and a group of his friends flew out to Cyprus for their first trip abroad without their families. On 18th July 2014 – three days into the holiday – Terry was killed in an accident near Aya Napa.

Having initially trying to persuade Terry against buying what I had thought to be such an old-fashioned bike, I had quickly fallen in love with the scooter after he had got it. Following his death, I have tried to do it up in the way that he had planned and have ridden it almost every day since. It is more than just a scooter to me – it is a part of Terry and every time I get on it I feel close to him.
